Chapter 22: Granted

His bed stood in the next room, huge and white-oak and bare, with a quilt I had never seen folded across the foot.

It was my quilt.

It was the one from the empty cottage.

"You took it," I said.

"You left it on the floor."

"I left it for the movers."

"I wanted something of yours in the house," he said. "I hope that's all right."

I laughed and swung my clutch off the chair where I had dropped it and sat on the edge of the mattress.

He sat beside me, naked except for his open shirt, and watched me take out a folded sheet of paper.

"Is that the terms?"

"It's something else."

I smoothed it on my knee.

I had typed it on Thursday, at my desk, on the credit union's good letterhead, and I had folded it small.

"I'm going to read this out loud," I said. "You'll sit there and not interrupt."

"Yes, ma'am."

I cleared my throat.

"To the Applicant. Re: your application for the position of the man Ebba Sundquist lets stay."

His mouth moved.

"We have reviewed your references," I read. "We have conducted an interview."

"We have observed your performance in the field over a period of twenty-five days."

"Twenty-five?"

"Quiet. We find that you listen, that you learn, and that you wash a pot properly, if not put it away properly."

"I'll fix that."

"We find you stand up in public. We find you ask."
