Chapter 7: The Help
Kjersti Vang came up the Hall steps at seven o'clock Monday morning in a camel wool coat.
She was tall, five foot ten, with ash-blonde hair pulled into a low straight ponytail and eyes the pale blue of skim milk.
She had a driver, and the driver had her luggage.
I was in the lobby with a clipboard, counting folding chairs for the Founders' Supper, and I looked up when the door opened.
She looked at me for a moment.
Then she took off her coat and held it out.
"Hang this up," she said.
I looked at the coat.
"I'm sorry?"
"The coat. And I'll want the Alpha's office cleared by noon. Whoever has been using the desk can move."
"I'm the bookkeeper."
"Exactly." She smiled, and there was no warmth in it. "The help. Where do I put my bags?"
I hung up the coat on the brass hook by the door.
