Chapter 4: What He Said on the Phone

The elevator numbers climbed down and stopped at the lobby.

Nobody at the studio moved until Elias said, "Go home, all of you. The pizza stays."

Chairs scraped. Coats came off hooks.

The receptionist left the roses on her desk and gave me a small nod on her way out.

Then the floor was quiet, and Elias was standing four feet away.

"He asked how he knew my start date," I said. "I'd like the real answer."

"You'll get it." He did not look away. "He called here eight days ago."

I felt the floor tilt.

"He asked for the head of the studio and got me. He said his name and that he was your partner."

"Boyfriend," I said.

"He said partner. He said you'd been stealing from his business and you weren't stable, and I'd regret putting you near a client's money."

My mouth had gone dry. "What did you say?"

"I asked how he had my number."

"What did he say?"

"He said a friend had sent him your offer letter." Elias folded his arms. "I told him your references were four pages long and his were zero. Then I told him not to call again."

"You didn't tell me."

"You weren't on my payroll yet. And you'd have spent the first day wondering if I believed him."

"Did you?"

"No."

He said it with no weight on it at all, the way he had said Wednesday.

I sat on the edge of my drafting table. My hands wanted something to do.

"A friend sent him my letter," I said.

"That's what he said."
