Chapter 19: The Vote
The boardroom of Whitcombe Academy has a table that seats fourteen and a portrait of a dead Aldridge on every wall.
By ten to seven there were two hundred people standing along those walls.
Students had climbed on the radiators.
Seven board members sat at the table.
Margot sat at the head of it, in black, with a leather folder squared in front of her.
I stood at the foot, with the Harbor on an easel beside me and Hattie at my elbow.
Zane was not with us, and I kept checking the door anyway.
"The Fellowship is frozen," Margot said, precisely at seven.
"The question before this board is whether to award it by the chair's discretion this evening, or to dissolve the finalist round entirely."
"Finalists may present."
"Miss Ferrier has five minutes," Margot said.
I took one.
"This is the painting," I said.
"I started it in August, and the thumbprint on the buoy is mine."
"A hired man copied it overnight from a photo, and my name is not on the copy."
"If you want to know whose hand made it, ask the man in the Beacon Street guest house."
