Zane sat down on my mother's porch step.
"The watch stopped at four on the pier," he said.
"The year changed on the card tonight."
"It's all coming to meet us, June."
"The future I came from is walking toward the same night, and I burned the map."
I sat beside him in the cold, with the foil plate in my lap.
"Good," I said.
He turned.
"If it's coming either way, I get to decide what's standing in the room."
He looked at me.
I let him look.
The dean came to my studio at ten the next morning, with the vice-chair beside him.
She was the quiet woman with silver glasses who had moved to remove Margot, and she was chair now.
She wore a gray coat and carried a folder, and she did not sit on my daybed.
"The Whitcombe Museum has a floor free on the ninth of December," she said.
"The Fellowship has never had a first show before."
"We'd like yours to be the first."
I stood with a paintbrush in my hand.
