Too Late to Win Me Back, Mr. Billionaire novel · Chapter 16 of 32

Chapter 16: Grounded

The letter came by email two days later, while I was pre-flighting the Hen for the morning mail.

Sawyer read it in the hangar office with his coffee going cold.

Then he came out and stood under the wing and didn't say anything for a while.

"What?" I said.

"Insurance."

"What about it?"

"They're canceling us. Effective Friday at midnight. 'A reassessment of operational risk.'"

I came out from under the engine cowling.

"We haven't had a claim in fifty years."

"Fifty-five." He handed me the phone. "Read the second paragraph."

The second paragraph said the underwriter had recently become aware of "a pending legal matter involving a Kinney Air pilot."

A pending legal matter. Kenzie's lawsuit.

"Who owns the insurance company?" I said.

Sawyer took his phone back and scrolled.

"Some outfit in Hartford. Which is owned by a bigger outfit in New York." He scrolled more. "Which is in the Delano Hotels annual report. Page forty. Our 'trusted partners.'"

I sat down on the wheel chock.

Without insurance, Kinney Air couldn't carry passengers. Couldn't carry mail for the post office. Couldn't carry a patient.

The Hen would sit in the hangar.

"Find another one," I said.

"I've been calling since seven. Nobody writes a one-plane island airline in November. Not this week. Not with your name in the papers."

My name in the papers.

I'd done that. Not on purpose, but I'd done it.

By Friday the whole island knew.

The mail came over on the ferry instead, a day late.

The pharmacy order didn't come at all.

Mrs. Delano's divorce, people were starting to call it. Not the airstrip vote. Not the resort.
