Chapter 18: The Boat

"I abandoned him," I said.

"That's the word."

"He got in a helicopter and left me on a lawn with no shoes."

"I know, honey. I've read your statement half a dozen times." Paper rustled on her end. "It's a stall. In Maine he can't stop a divorce. But he can drag it into the spring with motions and hearings and depositions. You'll be married to him on paper for months."

On paper.

I stood in the snow outside the bait shed and looked at my left hand.

The pale band was almost gone now. Six weeks of wind and sun had nearly closed it up.

"Why?" I said. "He doesn't want me. His mother says he was going to divorce me in the spring."

"I don't know why rich men do what they do," my lawyer said. "But I know a man who isn't ready to lose."

I found out why on Thursday.

I was flying the morning mail when the harbormaster called the hangar on the radio, which he never did.

"Kinney Air, harbor. You'll want to come down to the town dock when you land."

"Harbor, what's going on?"

A pause.

"Just come down, Darcy."

I landed at eleven and drove down Harbor Road in Sawyer's truck.
