Chapter 29: Two Planes
We found her in Ohio, at a freight outfit that was selling off half its fleet.
She was a used Cessna Caravan, eleven years old, white with a gray stripe.
She had a good engine, a cargo pod and a ding in the left flap.
The man selling her wanted four hundred and fifty thousand.
Sawyer said three-fifty.
I said nothing and walked around her twice with a flashlight.
Then I lay down on the cold hangar floor and looked at her belly for ten minutes.
"Corrosion on the belly skin," I said, sitting up. "Back by the step. Somebody painted over it."
The man selling her looked at the ceiling.
"Three-forty," I said.
We got her for three-sixty, with the flap fixed and a new paint job thrown in.
My three hundred and ten.
Sawyer's savings.
A loan from the co-op's reserve fund, voted on in the bait shed, which the two feuding brothers seconded together.
"Second thing in thirty-nine years," the co-op president said.
We flew commercial to Ohio in February to pick her up.
Then we flew her home together, two days across the country, Sawyer in the left seat one day and me the next.
We stopped for fuel in Pennsylvania and New York.
We spent one night in a motel in the Berkshires where the heater banged.
