Chapter 7: House Call

I tore the notice off the door.

Then I folded it into my back pocket and went home to make Kit's dinner, because the pills had to go down with food at six.

Pierce was sitting on my front steps.

He was in a navy overcoat with a cardboard box on his knees. His car, a black town car that had come over on the ferry, idled at the end of Tern Lane.

The neighbors' curtains were all moving.

"Hi," he said.

"Get off my steps."

"They're nice steps. I always said we should fix the railing."

"You always said we should sell the house."

He stood up.

He'd lost a little weight in three weeks. There were shadows under his eyes.

It suited him. Everything did.

"I brought Kit's medicine," he said, and held out the box. "Six months. I called her doctors."

I looked at the box.

Six months of the pills on my fridge chart. Twenty-three thousand dollars, give or take.

I'd spent two nights awake doing that math.

"How did you get her doctors to talk to you?"

"I'm still her brother-in-law."

"Not for long."

He set the box down on the porch rail, very gently.

"Darce, can I come in? Five minutes."

"You can say it on the steps."

Across the road, a porch light came on. I swore under my breath.

Pierce smiled. "It's an island. They'll hear it either way."

"Then say it."

He took a breath.

"I was wrong that night."

I waited.

"I panicked. Kenzie went down, Mom was screaming, and I thought Kit's call was another false alarm. I made the wrong choice. I know that now."

"Do you."

"I've had three weeks of you not answering my calls to figure it out."
