Chapter 15: The Price

Braden did not call his witness right away.

He walked down off the dais and across the floor until he stood close enough that only the first benches could hear him.

Everyone heard him anyway.

The hall had gone that quiet.

"Catriona," he said, in the voice he used for funerals. "I don't want this."

"You have a funny way of showing it."

"I was angry. I was a coward about the heir, and I handled it badly." He spread his hands. "So here is what I'll do, in front of the pack, so there's no question of it."

I waited.

"Withdraw from the vote. Come home as my second wife, with your clinic and your ring. Jolene will wear the Luna's seat, and you will have a place at the same table."

My younger daughter made a small, sharp sound on the bench.

"The girls come home with you," Braden said. "Nobody is hurt. My witness never has to open his mouth."

Wolves along the walls shifted their weight.

Some of them looked pleased.

It was a handsome offer, and he knew it.

It was the best offer a cast-off wife of forty-six had been made in that hall in her life, and he wanted two hundred witnesses to see him make it.

I looked at him for a long moment.

I thought about twenty years of mornings beside him.

Then I turned and spoke to the benches.

"Braden offers me a seat at the foot of his table," I said. "I sat at the head of it for two decades, and I cut your meat and I buried your dead."
