Chapter 20: Yes, Director

Ye-won should have said no.

She should have said, we have six days and a lawsuit and a recording and a man who wants us ruined.

Instead she stood in his dark entryway with her coat still on and heard herself say, "Yes."

His eyes changed.

They didn't change by much.

They widened, slowly and deliberately.

"Say it properly."

"Yes."

"Yes, what?"

She swallowed.

"Yes, you may lead."

"Good."

He took her coat off her shoulders and hung it on the hook.

He did it the way she had taken his off for weeks, gently, one sleeve at a time.

Then he took her hand and led her down the hall to his bedroom.

The lamp was on.

The bed was made up in white.

He stopped her at the foot of it and stood behind her, close enough that his chest warmed her back.

"You've been in charge for two months," he said into her hair.

"Every night. Every decision. You've held this whole thing together with both hands."

"Someone had to."

"I know. And I let you."

His hands came to the buttons of her blouse.

"Tonight," he said, "you're the actor. I'm the director."

Ye-won felt her knees go.

"Yes, director," she whispered.

He laughed softly, a low sound against her ear.

"That sounds better than I thought it would."

He undressed her slowly.

He opened each button of her blouse and slid it off her shoulders and folded it over the chair.
