Chapter 6: Page Sixty-One

Jang Dae-sik was eating kimbap in the parking lot when Ye-won found him.

"There was no shortlist," he said, before she asked.

"Ji-seon thinks there was."

"Ji-seon talks." He wiped his fingers on a napkin. "Hanbit sent him fifteen names. Actresses, a model, the daughter of a producer."

"And?"

"He read them and said no to all of them."

"Then who picked me?"

"He did. He asked for the coach whose studio closed in March."

She stared at him.

"He doesn't know me."

"I only drive the car," Jang said, and went back to his kimbap.

Ye-won found Tae-oh that night on the terrace of the penthouse.

He was in a gray T-shirt with a script rolled in his hand, looking at the river.

"Why me?"

He didn't turn around.

"You heard from Ji-seon."

"I heard from Jang. He says you ruled out fifteen women and asked for the one with the failed studio."

He was quiet.

She could see his shoulders working under the cotton.

"A student of yours gave an interview once," he said. "A girl, not a good actress. She said you never laughed at a bad take."

"That's it?"

"Everyone laughs, Ye-won. When I tell them I freeze. They don't mean to. It's a polite kind of laughing, in the eyes."

He turned.

"You didn't."

Ye-won looked at him.

Something was wrong with his answer.

It was a good answer, and it was almost the whole answer.

He was holding something back.

But his eyes were so steady, and so tired, that she couldn't make herself push.

"Okay," she said.

"Okay?"

"Page sixty-one."

His eyes went dark.

"Now?"

"You said every scene."

She walked past him into the bedroom.

It was huge, with a window wall, a low bed made up in white, and the river lights spilling across the covers.

She switched off the main light and left the lamp.

She turned and sat on the edge of the mattress.

"Come here."

He came and stood in front of her.

"The script says the widow undoes his belt," Ye-won said. "But you've been undressed twice now. This time, you watch me."

"Yes, director."

She stood and unzipped her dress.

It was the red silk, the same one.

It fell to the floor in a puddle, and she stood in front of him in her underwear.

He stared.

"Ye-won."

"You can say what you see."
