Chapter 7: The Mirror
On my name day he gave me a mirror.
It stood at the foot of his bed on a brass frame, tall enough to hold a woman from her ankles to her hair.
It had not been there that morning.
"Natia told me," Levan said. "Saint Ketevan. The thirteenth."
"You bought me a mirror."
"I bought myself a better view."
He stood behind me with his hands on my shoulders and the three lamps blazing, and for a moment I just looked at us.
A big man with a ruined face, and a woman in a green dress with her hair down to her waist.
"I have never liked mirrors," I said.
"I know. You look away from every one in this house." His thumbs moved on my collarbones. "Look now."
"Levan..."
"Look, Beridze."
I looked.
He unzipped my dress slowly, and the green fell off my shoulders and down my hips.
I stood in my underwear in front of my own reflection.
"Do you know what I see?" he said into my ear.
"Tell me."
"A mouth that was made for being kissed. A long throat. A little scar by your collarbone where something burned you."
His hand moved down, and he unhooked my bra and drew it away.
"These. Heavy, and soft. Your nipples have gone tight under my eyes, look at them."
"I see them," I said.
"Your waist, here, and your hips, the whole curve of you. The belly you hide in every dress."
I tried to cover it, and he took my wrist and moved it gently away.
"No. That's the best part."
"It's soft."
"It's yours. It's going to carry my child," he said, "and I'd like to say good morning to it every day of my life."
My eyes filled.
I turned my head and kissed him over my shoulder, hard, with my teeth on his lip.
