Chapter 13: Ninety-Nine Point Nine
Alex's POV
I shut my bedroom door with her back against it, and I could not make my hands stop shaking.
The house was dark behind us.
Downstairs my grandmother was washing the good plates by herself, and she had told the two of us to go to bed.
Ari stood in the green velvet with her palms flat on the wood and her chin up.
"You're angry," she said.
"Yes."
"Say why."
I had meant to wait until morning.
I had meant to be grateful and say nothing else.
"You put it on the cloth before you told me," I said.
Her eyes narrowed.
"Told you what?"
"What you were going to do with it.
"You stood up at that lunch in front of my uncle and said Christmas, and you never asked me.
"Today you slid it down the table to my grandmother and did not look at me once."
"You wouldn't take the test," she said.
"I thought it would say no."
My voice broke on the last word, and I hated that it did.
"And you put it in front of fourteen people and let my whole family watch me find out."
She did not flinch.
"You didn't find out," she said. "You stood up and said it was yours before the tape was torn."
"I know," I said.
"Then what are you angry about?" she asked.
"That I sat there not knowing whether you'd still want me when it was read."
She looked at me for a long moment.
Something crossed her face, and she put it away before I could read it.
"I put it on the cloth because you wouldn't," she said.
That was all she said.
Then she turned around, lifted her braid off her neck and showed me the zipper.
"Take it off me, Alex."
I forgot what I had been angry about.
I drew the zipper down slowly, tooth by tooth, over the knobs of her spine.
The velvet slid off her shoulders and pooled at her feet.
She stepped out of it in her slip and turned to face me.
I put my hands on the hem and drew the slip up and over her head.
She was naked under it, and the lamp caught her.
Fifteen weeks.
The curve below her navel had come out round in the week since the mirror, firm and low and warm.
