Chapter 21: Spring Basin

"Say it again," Thad said, and Wystan said it, and then said it a third time before the lamp burned out.

The next morning Thad's knees were still weak.

He made the porridge anyway, humming off-key, with a spoonful of honey on top and a clean cloth over the pot.

Wystan woke slowly in the furs, and the first thing he did was look for him.

The second was to smile, and it took Thad's breath away.

It was a full smile, wide and shy and unguarded, and it showed his teeth.

"Good morning," Wystan said, rough from sleep.

"You smiled," Thad said.

"I did not."

"I saw teeth."

Wystan's ears went scarlet.

"You blush faster than Dock, too," Thad added.

Wystan threw a fur at him, and Thad laughed, and the day began.

By noon the twins' mother had come to the cave mouth with a sled.

Her own two boys rode on it, and so did Tuck and Dock, whom she had collected from Marren's den on the way.

The four of them had been talking about sledding for a week.

"I'll keep yours," she said.

"All day. They'll eat with us and sleep in a heap. You two look like you could use an afternoon to yourselves."

She had a very kind, very knowing face.

Thad looked at Wystan, whose ears were back again.

"We could manage," Thad said, with great dignity.

When the sled bells had gone, Wystan was standing in the doorway of the back chamber with his hands behind his back.
