The Hold was gathered at the Stone by noon, and nobody had been told why.
They had simply come, because word had gone round.
Thad stood in front of the black rock with Tuck on one side and Dock on the other, both scrubbed pink, both in clean shirts.
Wystan stood at the other end of the line in the good vest his mother had mended.
His ears stood straight up, and his tail was tucked tight.
Marren stood at the front with her spear grounded and her arms crossed.
"The Hold is gathered," she said. "Who speaks?"
"I do," said Wystan.
He stepped forward and laid his palm on the cold stone.
He did not look at the Hold.
He looked at Thad.
"Thad Brindle," he said, and his voice was steady, though his hand was not.
"Two winters ago you stood here and said something about me, in front of all of them."
Nobody laughed.
"I stood here and let it be said. I want to say something back, in the same place, in daylight."
He took a breath.
"Stay with me. Not by Hold law. Not for the cubs. Because I want you at my fire for as long as I have one."
