Chapter 15: What the Cleaner Found

Larissa's POV

The night cleaner was waiting by the loading dock at ten, in gray scrubs, with a small gray recorder in a sandwich bag.

She was a woman in her fifties with a cart and tired eyes.

"I'd hand it to Dr. Moffat," she said, "but they told me he's not allowed in the building."

"He's in the car," I said. "He'll wait."

She pressed the bag into my palm.

"I only wanted somebody to ask me," she said, and went back to her cart.

Lachlan stayed in the car at the curb.

I took a visitor badge from the desk and rode up to the third floor.

Tobias was on the night shift there.

He found me in the corridor outside the on-call room.

"You're not supposed to be here," he said, and pulled me inside and shut the door.

It was a narrow room with a bunk bed, a desk and a lamp.

I held up the bag.

His face changed.

"That's hers?"

"The cleaner took it from under the exam table this morning."

He pressed the play button with his thumb.

The first thing we heard was a chair scraping. Then Janelle's voice, light and low, a little breathless.

"I'm on the floor of the clinic. Of course I'm sure. The list was posted Friday, and I know whose name is on it."

A pause, and a man's voice, small and tinny, on a speaker.

"Nine o'clock," Janelle said. "Moffat's best friend's daughter, on his own table, in front of his own intern."

The tinny voice said something short.

"If he arranged it, it's on tape. If he didn't, it's still on tape."

She laughed softly.

"Either way the board gets a long file, the attending slot opens, and I'm next in line."

The clip ended there.

Tobias stood completely still.
