Chapter 8: His Rule, Broken

Lachlan had not told me where to come, so I chose his office, on the fourth floor, at seven in the evening.

I did it on purpose.

I wanted to see if the man who made rules would break one.

The waiting room was dark.

A strip of light showed under his door at the end of the hall.

I knocked once and walked in.

He was at the desk in his shirtsleeves with a pen in his hand, and he stood up so fast the chair rolled back.

"Not here," he said. "Larissa, I told you. Never in the hospital."

"I saw a different doctor this morning." I shut the door behind me. "A woman, across town. It's a small cyst. It will probably go away on its own."

His shoulders dropped in relief.

"I'm glad."

"You should be. You were going to wait six months to find out if I was dying."

"I was going to examine you myself, after you'd agreed to everything."

"I know what you were going to do."

I turned the lock.

It clicked in the quiet.

He looked at the lock, and then at me, and I watched him decide.

"You came here to take my rule away," he said.

"I came here because it's your rule and I wanted to see you break it."

He crossed the room in three strides.

His hands went to my face, and he kissed me the way he had in his kitchen, only without anger or hurry in it.

It was deep and certain, and he had stopped arguing with himself.

My back met the door.

"Tell me what he did last night," Lachlan said, low, against my mouth.

"Tobias?"

"I sat outside your building for three hours. I want to know."

Heat rolled through me.

"He kissed me everywhere," I said. "He made me come with his mouth. Then he was inside me, and I came again."
