Chapter 9: My Lips Are Sealed

Lachlan pulled his trousers up and fastened his belt in one smooth movement.

I grabbed my dress off the floor.

"Behind the desk," he whispered.

I dropped to the carpet on the far side with the dress against my chest.

He smoothed his shirt, opened the door a hand's width, and stood in the gap.

"Janelle," he said, evenly. "It's after seven."

"I know, I'm so sorry." Her voice was bright and soft. "I forgot my tablet, and the hall lights came on and I saw yours, and I thought you were sick or something."

"I'm fine. Working late."

"Okay. Good." A pause. "Is that Larissa's bag on the chair?"

My stomach turned over.

I had left my tote on the visitor's chair, with my library badge clipped to the strap.

Lachlan did not look back.

"Her follow-up was today," he said. "She came by to go over the plan."

"Of course."

There was another small pause, and then Janelle laughed, low and friendly.

"Dr. Moffat, relax. I'm not going to say a word. Honestly? I think it's sweet. You've been so lonely since your divorce. She seems lovely."

Lachlan did not answer.

"My lips are sealed," Janelle said. "I'll tell her myself, if she's in there. I won't tell anyone else."

I stood up from behind the desk, dress on, with my hair a wreck.

I did not know what else to do.

Janelle was in the doorway, small in her scrubs, with her tablet held against her chest.

She looked at me and her whole face softened.
