Chapter 12: The Writ

I pulled on my dress with Mathis watching, and I did not speak until we reached the gate.

The sun was barely up.

Corbin stood outside the iron bars with a paper in his hand and a Silverfang car behind him.

Verena sat in the passenger seat with her arms around herself.

"Sabine," Corbin called. His smile was back, tired and warm. "Thank God. I've been driving all night."

"You were not invited into Blackmoor."

"I carry a writ." He held it up. "From the Council."

Hester Quill had not signed it. I could see the signature from where I stood, and it was a thick man's scrawl.

It was the elder with the white sideburns.

"It says your pledge to Alpha Draycott is void," Corbin said. "You were registered on the Silverfang roll as my mate three years ago. The Accord requires an unmated bride."

Mathis's hand closed on the gate.

I felt his wolf rise, and I laid my palm flat on his forearm.

"Open it," I said to the wolf on the gate. "Let him in."

"Sabine," Mathis said.

"I want him in front of your people."

The gate swung wide.

Corbin walked into the yard, and the Blackmoor wolves closed around him in a ring.

He did not like that.

He held out the writ, and I read it.

Under the Silverfang roll, in neat black ink, was a name I knew: Sabine Wells, mate-in-record, with my initials.

They were very good initials.

"This is not my hand," I said.

"It's in the record. It's been there three years."

"I never signed it."

"You did, love." His voice was gentle. "You don't remember. You signed so much of what I gave you."
