Chapter 17: Cedar Hollow, Again

My father drove the whole way with both hands on the wheel.

He didn't turn on the radio.

Somewhere past Medina I held out my good hand.

"Give me your phone."

"Why?"

"Because I'm going to press the red button, and it stays on until we leave."

He handed it over.

I opened the recorder, set it going and slid it into his coat pocket.

"Don't take it out," I said. "Don't touch it. Just let it listen."

"Are you sure about going back?"

"No. But you've never seen it."

He didn't answer, and the road unrolled gray and flat.

Cedar Hollow looked smaller than I remembered.

It was a long brick building with a flagpole, and a sign out front with a cartoon sun.

I had walked out of that door yesterday with the cardboard against my stomach.

The woman at the front desk had a plate of brochures.

"Gordon Hartley," my father said. "I'd like a tour of the wing I paid for."

Her smile slid off her face, and she picked up the phone.

The director came down the hall before she finished dialing, tall and soft, with her hands folded.
