Chapter 5: Bid Day

I called my father from the parking lot before the black car had even turned the corner.

He picked up on the first ring this time.

"Why is your driver picking up Brielle Tullis at a scholarship dinner?"

"Olivia, it's two in the morning here."

"You were awake. Why?"

He sighed.

"I send a car for Lorna's girl now and then. Lorna asked. She worries about her driving home at night."

"Two hundred miles?"

"He was in the area."

"Dad."

"Goodnight, Olivia. Think about what I said."

He hung up.

Brodie was leaning against his truck with his hands in his too-short sleeves.

"Your dad lends his driver to the girl stealing your name," he said.

"He says Lorna asked."

"Huh." He opened my door for me. "My dad doesn't lend anybody his socket wrench."

The next afternoon I signed up for sorority recruitment.

Trudy found the confirmation email on my laptop while I was in the bathroom.

"Absolutely not," she said through the door.

"It's already done."

"Liv, she will drown you in a kiddie pool and post it."

I came out and sat on the arm of the couch.

"In five weeks Delta Phi picks its Homecoming Queen candidate. The members vote. Brielle's been campaigning since last spring."

"So?"

"So right now she's untouchable in that house. They all think she's a Haldane."

I picked at the hem of my sweater.

"I want to be in the room when they stop thinking it."

Trudy stared at me.

"That's either genius or the dumbest thing I've ever heard."

"Can't it be both?"

Brodie knocked on our open door with a carton of eggs, because he'd run out again.
