Chris was still holding the notebook when the door opened.
Leander came in with his lacrosse bag on his shoulder and his hair damp from the shower.
He saw the green cover, and he stopped.
For a moment, neither of them said anything.
"You told me not to read your handwriting," Chris said.
"I did."
"I thought you meant it was messy."
Leander set down the bag very slowly.
"It is messy," he said.
"Some of it."
Chris held up the open page.
"This is the chain rule problem you got wrong on Tuesday."
"This one is right."
"I can explain."
"Then explain."
"Chris, it's not what it looks like."
"It looks like homework," Chris said.
"Perfect homework. Weeks of it. Dated."
Leander opened his mouth, closed it, and tried again.
"I do homework at night."
