Chapter 27: Same Night Again

Ciro stood on the second step with one hand on the rail.

"Why?" he said, very carefully, like he was afraid of the answer.

"No reason."

"You always have a reason."

"I had a whole list," I said. "I threw it out in the car. Get up here."

He came back up the stairs two at a time.

I had his tie in my fist before he cleared the top step.

"Inside," I said, and pulled.

He let me.

That was the thing about Ciro.

He could put a man through a wall with a look, but when I pulled, he came.

The door shut behind us.

I backed him against it and kissed him, and his hands found my hips like they'd been waiting all night to land there.

"Trixie."

"Shut up."

He laughed into my mouth, low and warm, and I bit his lower lip just to hear it again.

The bedroom was six steps and a lifetime away.

I walked him backward, my hands on his chest, his tie still wrapped around my knuckles.

The lamp was on.

The window was open.

The pink neon from next door blinked through the curtain like a pulse.

I pushed him down on the edge of the bed.

He sat there in his navy suit, watching me with those dark eyes, and I stood between his knees and unwound the tie.

Slow.

Button by button.

I let him watch.

"You said no reason," he said.

"I lied."

"I know."

I pushed the shirt off his shoulders and ran my hands down his chest.

The scar on his ribs, old and white.

The beat of his heart under my palm, fast as mine.

"I wanted you to stay because I'm done being careful with you."

His breath caught.

Just once.

I reached for his belt, and he let me, his hands flat on the bed on either side of his hips.

When I had him out, hard and hot in my hand, I heard him swallow.

"Look at you," I said. "All that money and you're shaking."

"I'm not shaking."

"You are."

I leaned down and kissed the scar through his eyebrow, then his mouth, and I stroked him slow.

His hand came up and caught my wrist.

"My turn," he said.

And just like that, the game flipped.
