Chapter 29: Christmas Eve
At five to midnight on Christmas Eve, Lexie took Bean out of my arms.
"Go," she said. "Before I cry and you miss it."
"Miss what?"
"I don't know. He didn't tell me. I'm just guessing based on his face."
"What's his face doing?"
"Sweating," Lexie said.
I went down the back stairs in my socks and a cardigan, because nobody had said dress up.
The shop was dark.
The boardwalk outside was empty and cold and white, and every casino sign up the beach was blinking for nobody.
There was one light on in the back room.
I pushed the curtain aside.
Ciro had moved the buying desk against the wall and put a small round table in the middle of the floor.
Two chairs. Two plates. A candle in a jam jar.
On each plate sat something that had tried very hard to be an almond croissant.
It was flat. One end was black.
"Don't say anything," he said.
"I didn't say anything."
"Your face said something."
"My face said that's a pancake."
