Chapter 30: Two Weddings, One Aisle

I ran up the back stairs with the price tag still swinging off my finger.

Lexie met me halfway and grabbed my left hand. I grabbed hers.

We stood on the stairs comparing rings in the light from the kitchen.

Hers was a narrow gold band with one small square sapphire.

"His mother's," Lexie said. "From his dad. She gave it to him at Thanksgiving. He's been carrying it in his sock drawer for a month."

I reached for my loupe.

"Don't you dare price it," she said.

"I wasn't going to."

"You were."

"I was going to say it's real."

"I know it's real," Lexie said. "He said four whole sentences. I counted."

Behind her, Cillian's ears went red in the doorway.

Behind me, Ciro started laughing on the bottom step.

"Same night," Lexie said.

"We do everything together."

"Then we do that together too," she said. "One aisle."

We got married on March twenty-eighth, on the penthouse floor of the Seaview, one year to the night after the ball.

Lexie picked the date.

"It's the anniversary of the worst decision we ever made," she said. "We should get presents for it."

The ballroom had the same brass lamps, the same windows over the ocean, the same string quartet.

This time it played something that wasn't Sinatra.

There was one long table in front of the windows.

The Vaccaro elders on one side, the Whalen elders on the other, and nobody had put a rope between them.

Cillian's mother sat in the middle, in a blue hat she'd knitted herself.

She had Bean on one knee and Peanut on the other, both three months old, both in tiny white aprons over their outfits.

"From Nice," I told the old man with the cane. "There's a story."

"There's always a story with you two," he said.

Nobody gave us away.

Nobody owned us to give.

Lexie and I walked each other down the aisle, arm in arm, in masks.

Gold for me, over an ivory dress with gold beads at the neck.

Silver for her, over a lilac gown that she said was technically white.
