Chapter 32: Two Besties
Lexie and I looked at each other across the little table.
We'd been naming things together since fourth grade. Hamsters. Bad boyfriends. Babies the size of legumes.
"You first," Lexie said.
"No. You."
The old woman waited with her arms folded.
Lexie turned to her and spoke very slowly into the phone.
"Same name," she said. "Your name. The one on the window. Nothing changes."
The phone said it in French.
The old woman listened.
Then she went to the drawer under the bread box and took out something folded.
A brown paper bag, soft from being handled, with a lemon-shaped magnet still stuck to one corner.
She unfolded it on the table.
Our rules from the first week, in Lexie's marker, all four lines.
She'd kept it for over a year.
She tapped the third line with one floury finger, then pointed at Ciro and Cillian, and raised her eyebrows.
"She wants to know if the men are still third," Lexie said.
Ciro looked at me.
Cillian looked at Lexie.
"Tell her they're working their way up," I said.
The old woman looked the two men over.
Then she pointed down the stairs at the fifty-pound flour sacks stacked by the ovens.
