Chapter 15: The Legacy Grants

Leo's POV

I stood across the street from her mother's house until the sun came up.

I did not knock.

She had said do not follow me, and I had spent my whole life being the brother who was good at following instructions he liked.

This was one I did not like, and I kept it.

At seven a black car stopped at the curb, and our driver got out with a white envelope.

I knew the car, and I knew the envelope.

I watched him knock, and I watched Siobhan open the door in yesterday's sweater.

I watched her read the check on the stoop.

Then the door closed, and the driver came back down the steps with his hands empty and his head down.

He saw me.

"Mr. Leo," he said.

"Whose idea was it?" I asked.

"Your mother's, sir. Last night."

"You took it up at seven in the morning."

"She was very particular about the hour," he said.

I nodded.

I had known my mother all my life, and I still had not learned to be surprised.
