Chapter 17: Boarding Pass
"Don't," I said, from the bottom of the steps. "Whatever that is, don't."
"It's a boarding pass."
"I can see that. It has my name on it."
"It's for Friday the fifth. Round trip, back on Sunday."
"To Denver."
"To the base." He held it out, a little stiffly. "Seat 14C. Aisle. I paid for the aisle."
I didn't take it.
Across the street, a woman in a puffy vest stopped raking her yard and began to rake the same spot again, slowly.
"You bought me a plane ticket," I said, "to a city where you'd like to live."
"I bought you a plane ticket so you'd see what you're telling me to go to."
"I'm not telling you to go."
"You told me not for you. Friday night. Twice."
"That's not telling you to go. That's telling you not to use me as the reason."
"Well, I'm using you as the reason," Will said. "It's the only one I've got."
That stopped me.
He looked as though it had stopped him, too.
"Let me back up," he said.
"Please."
"I went to the base. They flew me up in the morning, and there's a helicopter, Claire, and a pad on the roof, and I stood out there at sunrise, and the Rockies were pink."
His whole face changed when he said it.
I hadn't seen it before.
He looked about nineteen, and he looked happy, and I hated how good it looked on him.
"It's the best job I'll ever be offered," he said. "I know that. I stood there knowing it."
"So take it."
"And then I thought about a green door."
"That's not an argument."
"It's the only one I have."
"It's a door, Will."
"It's your door."
I came up the steps.
I stopped one below him, so we were eye to eye, and kept my hands in my coat pockets because I didn't trust them.
