Chapter 8: The Green Door
Mandy was standing at the top of the courthouse steps with a rolling suitcase and a plastic grocery bag.
The wind off Market Street had pulled her hair loose from its clip.
She looked like a woman who had decided something and was waiting for her legs to agree.
Patty arrived a few seconds after me, on the best friend's arm.
Dean was still upstairs, sitting on a bench with his walker, waiting for the elevator that took six minutes.
"Mrs. Colvin," Mandy said.
"Mandy." Patty's mouth had gone small and tight. "I don't know what you think you're going to say."
"Nothing. I'm giving you something."
She held out her hand.
In it sat a ring of keys with a gold Buick tag.
"I drove your car all weekend," Mandy said. "You can't drive at night with your knee, and I wasn't going to leave you on a bus stop in the dark."
Patty stared at the keys.
"It's on level three of the Washington Street garage," Mandy said. "The ticket's in the visor."
"That's very..." Patty began.
"This one's to my condo."
She dropped a second key into Patty's palm, a plain brass one.
"His things are in two bags at the front desk. He can send somebody for them. He doesn't get to come back."
"You can't put him out on the street, Mandy. He's hurt."
"He's thirty-six. He's got a mother."
Her voice was so even I almost didn't hear the shake in it.
"I've called the venue, and I'm eating the deposit. My father will have words for him later. I'd like it on record that I did not throw anything at anyone."
"It's on record," I said.
Mandy turned to me.
For a moment she looked as though she'd say something polished.
