Chapter 9: Mouth Open
"After nine o'clock this morning," Will said again, because I was still holding the letter.
"You were going to wait for the judge?"
"You were married."
"Everyone's been very clear on that for three days."
"I didn't want to put a second thing on you while you still had the first one." He turned the burner off. "Then you were in my kitchen, and I thought, well, there goes that."
I put the page down on the table, flat.
"Don't decide anything because of me," I said.
"I haven't decided anything."
"Good. Don't."
"You say that like it's easy."
"It's an order," I said. "Eat your eggs."
He did, which told me more about him than anything else that week.
On Tuesday I went back to work.
My office is a pale-green suite on the north side, with a fish tank in the waiting room, and I've cleaned teeth there for eleven years.
At noon the front desk buzzed me.
"There's a man in the lot with a paper bag," the receptionist said. "He's holding it like a bomb."
I went to the window.
Will stood by his truck in his work jacket with a sandwich in one hand and a cup of soup in the other.
He lifted the soup like a toast.
I walked out through the lobby, past three people with their coats still on, and down the front steps.
"It's chicken noodle," he said.
"You brought me soup."
"You didn't eat yesterday. I noticed."
I took the bag from him, set it on the hood of his truck, and kissed him.
