Chapter 20: The Fourteen Rooms

Lawrence's POV

I let the phone ring out.

On the second call I put it face down on the shop counter and asked Millicent whether she wanted to hear the message.

"Not by myself," she said. "Play it with me."

Leona's voice filled the dark shop.

She wasn't crying. She sounded tired.

"I'm at the house," she said. "On your steps, with a bag. I have nowhere to go. I'll wait until four."

Millicent looked at me.

"I'm going to sign something first," I said. "Then I'll come."

"Sign what?"

"Something I should have done the night I found the folder."

She studied my face.

"I'll be at the house at four," she said. "I'm not letting you stand on those steps by yourself."

I kissed her forehead. She let me.

The Foundation's treasurer was waiting at nine in an office with the blinds half down.

He was a thin, careful man who had worked for my father, and he didn't look at me when I sat.

"I found it," he said, and slid a ledger across the desk. "The Family Housing Fund. Eight years ago a payment of two million dollars was drawn on your mother's signature, coded as a grant."

"Who got the grant?"

"It went to a bank in Providence. It was a cashier's check."

I put my finger on the line.

The Family Housing Fund paid rent for families who'd been evicted. It was the thing my father started the Foundation to do.
