The motion to suspend the chair came up at ten past four on Friday, and it came up fast.
"Item one," said Ning Boyuan. "An audit of Fangshun Logistics, submitted by its own finance director."
He laid a thick blue document on the pale table.
Tang Shuo's name was on the cover, in gold.
"It alleges that Mr. Fang paid himself fourteen million through a shell company," said Ning.
He spread his rings.
"I do not say it is true. I say a chairman under such a cloud should step aside."
"It's a forgery!" Wen said, rising.
"Sit down, Ms. Wen," said the older nominee.
"Tang Shuo is in a police station!"
"He is out on bail, and he is a witness."
Fang sat very still.
He had promised himself in the lift that he would not shout.
"I am not allowed to vote on my own case," he said, in a flat, tight voice. "So someone else do it."
"Seconded," said the younger nominee, touching his watch.
"Votes," said Shen Yunzhi.
Her face was perfectly calm, in dark green, at the foot of the table.
"Ning Boyuan, for. For. For," said the chief of staff, reading the three.
"Lu Zhenyu, against. Wen Jiaying, against. Mr. Fang abstains."
"Madam Lu."
Fang looked at her.
She looked back at him, steadily.
"For," said Shen Yunzhi.
