Chapter 21: Breakfast Terms
The marriage agreement had thirty-one pages, and Fang found it on the kitchen counter at seven in the morning, under a plate of salty eggs.
Lu stood at the stove in his shirtsleeves with his back to him.
"You cooked," said Fang.
"I made an egg," said Lu.
"You made six," said Fang.
"I was uncertain of the quantity."
Fang sat on a stool and pulled the agreement toward him.
He flipped to page nineteen.
Clause seven, public only. Clause eight, separate bedrooms.
Clause nine said either party could end the marriage when the merger closed, or after one year, with courtesy.
The merger had closed yesterday morning, just past ten.
"It's been closed since the gavel," Fang said.
"Yes."
"So I could end it today."
"You could," said Lu, and his back went still. "With courtesy."
He did not turn around.
Fang picked up the page by its top corner.
He tore it in half.
He tore it again, slowly, along the fold, and again, until clause nine lay on the counter in six pieces of white paper.
