Chapter 7: The Chair
The first board lunch of Yunhe Holdings was held on the thirty-eighth floor, under a painting of a river.
Seven chairs stood around a table of pale wood.
Fang Yue took the one beside his husband's, and looked down the table at the other side.
Ning Boyuan sat opposite in a cream jacket, with a nominee on each hand.
The older nominee wore a bow tie.
The younger one wore a very new watch and kept touching it.
"Gentlemen," said Lu. "Lunch, then business. Mr. Fang's people have sent food."
"Mr. Fang's people," said the older nominee, with delight. "The drivers."
"The drivers," Fang agreed.
He lifted the lid on the first tray, and the smell of braised pork went across the room.
Shen Yunzhi, at the foot of the table, did not smile.
She also took a second bowl.
"Mr. Fang is a delightful addition to the family," said Ning, warmly. "But a board is a board."
He spread his rings on the table.
"We need a chair for the interim. A neutral hand."
"I propose myself," said Lu.
"I would propose a man of experience. Someone independent. Say, me."
The older nominee coughed, and the younger one touched his watch.
"Mr. Fang," said the older nominee. "You'll forgive me. You are very kind. But drivers do not read balance sheets."
Fang put down his chopsticks.
"Your hotels buy sixty-one thousand sheets a month," he said, pleasantly. "You pay fourteen percent over for last-mile delivery."
