Chapter 10: The Heir Vote

Ivy's POV

On Friday I sat in the Luna's seat in the pack hall for the first time in two years.

It was a plain oak chair at the left of the Alpha's, and I had never once used it.

About a hundred wolves filled the benches.

Hazel sat in the front row with her arms crossed and a folder in her lap.

Ronan stood against the back wall, because he had no vote and no seat.

He had not looked at me since I came in.

I could feel him not looking.

Godfrey rose from the elders' bench and leaned on his silver cane.

"My friends," he said. "Stonebrook has a hard season behind it and a hopeful one ahead."

He let that sit.

"Mirelle Foxworth carries a Hargrove pup. Fourteen weeks, confirmed by the clinic."

Murmurs went around the benches.

"I move that the pack name that pup its heir."

Mirelle was sitting at the end of the elders' bench in her blue cardigan with her hands folded over her stomach.

She was so pale that her lips had no color.

"Is there any word against?" Godfrey asked, with a gentle smile at the room.

I stood.

The room quieted, and the quiet was louder than I'd expected.

"There's a word," I said. "But I don't want to say it first."

Godfrey's smile stayed where it was, and his eyes went hard.

"Child, this is not the moment."

"This is the only moment you've given me."

I turned to Mirelle.

"Mirelle. Everyone here believes your pup is fourteen weeks old and Ronan's."
