Chapter 16: Claimed

"Nothing," I said. "I want nothing from you."

Dario's mouth opened.

"You can keep the house and the car and the nice trainer. Keep my arrows too, if you can read them."

I shut the folder.

I walked off his ice with every player in the building watching, and nobody said my name.

By nine that night I was on the penthouse doorstep in a borrowed jacket with the folder under my arm.

Fiona opened the door and looked at my face.

"He's in the study," she said, and went the other way.

Cillian stood at the long wall of photographs with his back to me and his sleeves pushed up.

He turned around slowly.

"Boston?" he said.

"I read it to the whole team."

"I saw."

"Saw what?"

"Fiona sent me the clip. Six minutes ago." His jaw worked. "You were standing on his ice and I wasn't there."

"You weren't invited."

"I know."

I put the folder on his desk and took off the jacket.

"You think I'm going to go back," I said.

He didn't answer, which was an answer.

"You think I'm using your bed to hurt him. You think when it's over, I'll walk home to the one who needs me."

"You've been needed your whole life," Cillian said. "It's the only thing anybody's ever paid you in."

"And you paid me in a contract."

"Yes."

"With eggs, and a bodyguard, and a roof." I walked toward him. "You asked me for one thing, and you called it a job. Everything since then wasn't on the invoice."
