Chapter 17: The Luna's Pen
Hazel's POV
Two Marrick warriors had Sydney by the arms before the last Brannock was off the steps.
She stood between them in her cream cardigan and didn't struggle.
Mabel had washed my shoulder and bound it, Rafe had pulled on a pair of trousers somebody found for him, and the hall was packed and silent.
Dustin came back through the open doors an hour later.
He carried a pillowcase in both arms with the corners tied, and he set it on the dais at my feet.
"Third board from the window," he said. "Where I said."
I untied it.
The Law Book was heavy and bound in black leather gone soft with age, and a brass clasp held it shut.
"Sydney," I said. "Do you want to tell them what's in here before I do?"
"I don't know what you mean," she said gently.
I opened the book to the middle, and my breath stopped.
Down the margin of every page, around the old printed script, ran small, neat, round handwriting in blue ink.
I had read that handwriting on every birthday card I'd ever been given.
"You wrote in the Law Book," I said.
"I keep the pack's books."
"You wrote in the oldest thing this pack owns. For six years." I turned the page. "Will you read it to them?"
"No."
"Then I'll have the Beta do it."
"Hazel," Sydney said softly. "You don't want to hear what's there."
"I do."
"Read it, Beta," I said.
The Beta took the book and cleared his throat.
"Written on the margin of the Daughter's page," he read. "Twelfth of September. E. will not tell her. Keep the key on my belt. If the girl asks about the offering page, send her to the Beta's rite book, which tells her nothing."
