Chapter 14: The Kitchen Table

Tucker came in last, with lake water still on his boots.

He stopped in the kitchen doorway when he saw me sitting at the head of the table in daylight, in an old t-shirt, with a green notebook under my hand.

"Morning, Roxy," he said.

"Sit down, Tucker."

He looked at Byron.

Byron said nothing, so Tucker sat.

Denton was already at the table with a mug he had not touched.

He had put his glasses on, and he took them off again and set them by the sugar bowl.

Nobody reached for the coffee.

"I'm going to say this once," I said. "I haven't taken the tablet in ten weeks."

The kitchen clock ticked.

"I was awake the first Friday. I was awake when Denton checked my pulse, and when Abel got his hands on me, and when Byron held my hand. I was awake all of it."

Tucker's face did something I had never seen it do.

It went completely blank.

"No," he said.

"Yes."

"You were asleep. Denton wrote the."

"Denton wrote a low dose, and I stopped swallowing it," I said. "You sat by my bed the second Friday, Tucker, and you told me about the bike chain."

He did not move.

A dull red crawled up out of his beard and into his hairline.

"You said I was soft," I said. "You said you'd do it again."

"Jesus," Tucker said, very quietly.

"I heard every word. I kept my eyes shut because I wanted it. I want you to know that. You didn't do anything to me I didn't want."
