Chapter 19: Slip Number Eleven
"Sit down," Abel said to his wife, through his teeth.
She did not sit.
His wife was a small woman in a pale dress, with her hair pinned up.
Her pearls caught the white lights.
She walked around the table to the lectern, and the whole room parted for her.
She took the remote out of his hand.
He let her, because sixty people were watching, and she pressed a button, and the screen went dark.
"Thank you," she said to the room, in a clear voice. "I'd like to say something, and then I'll go home."
Nobody moved.
"On Thursday my husband told me he had a surprise for the club. He's not good at surprises. So when he went out to the boat I opened the safe in his office."
Abel took a step toward her.
"Don't," Abel said.
"It was open, because he never closes it."
She reached into her small silver bag and held up a black memory stick between two fingers.
"This was in it, with a note in his hand."
"'Spare copy. Keep until Faulk signs.'"
"He played the first one from the laptop tonight. This is the spare."
The harbor master set down his pipe.
"I watched what's on it in the car. I watched a young woman lie in her bed and open her eyes at a man holding a phone. He told me she was drugged. I looked at her face, and she was not drugged."
She turned to me.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I should have looked sooner."
I opened my mouth, and nothing came out.
She turned back to her husband, and her voice stayed exactly as calm.
