Chapter 17: Board
The board of Amesbury Capital met in Benedict's dining room, around a table meant for twelve.
Seven directors sat on one side.
Miriam Ellingwood sat at the far end, in navy, with her lawyer and a leather folder.
I stood against the wall by the window with my hands behind my back.
Benedict had asked me three times to wait in the hall.
I had said no three times.
The chairman called the meeting to order.
He was seventy, with white hair and the face of a man who had dreaded a Monday.
"We have one item," he said. "A motion from the Ellingwood Trust to remove Benedict Amesbury as managing partner, for cause."
"State the cause," said a woman halfway down the table.
Miriam's lawyer cleared his throat.
"A romantic relationship with a subordinate under his direct supervision. A breach of the firm's conduct policy."
Every head turned to me.
I kept my chin level.
"Benedict," the chairman said wearily. "Do you dispute it?"
"No."
I had not expected that.
The room had not expected that either.
"I do not dispute that I am in a relationship with Ms. Trowbridge," Benedict said.
