Chapter 19: London
The Dean of Foxcroft School of Economics wore a grey cardigan and had a desk covered in paper.
She did not offer tea.
"Ms. Trowbridge," she said. "I have a letter from the Ellingwood Foundation's counsel, accusing you of fraud."
"I know."
"It is thorough, and it is vicious."
"I know that too."
"I am required to ask whether it is true."
I put the laptop on her desk and opened the folder.
"No," I said.
I set down the graded essay from my freshman year, with the professor's red pen on page two.
Beside it I set a printout of my draft folder, every version dated by the machine.
Then I set the last page, a screenshot of an email from Camryn's own account.
Benedict had saved it.
It was the first message Camryn sent him, the one that said, I borrowed the ideas.
The Dean read every page.
She did it slowly, and I did not fidget.
"Ms. Trowbridge," she said at last, "this is the original of the paper the committee found."
"Yes."
"So the work we penalized in the Ellingwood case was yours."
