Chapter 24: Keep Throwing
Camryn sat on the stone steps outside the hotel, under the awning, with one suitcase between her feet.
The rain had slowed to a mist.
She had her arms wrapped around her knees, and she looked about twelve years old.
Benedict stopped at the top of the steps.
"I'll be in the doorway," he said.
"You don't have to."
"I know. I'd like to."
He went back under the light, and left the door unlatched behind him.
I sat down beside Camryn on the wet stone, in the green dress, and did not mind.
"Foxcroft sent the letter," she said. "I read it on the plane. I'm removed."
"I'm sorry."
"You're not."
"I am," I said. "I'm just not sorry it's true."
She laughed, wetly, and wiped her nose with the back of her hand.
"My father went to his sister's in Maine. My mother's lawyers are giving her a room at the hotel and nothing else."
