Chapter 7: A Warm Cup

They came up the track in six trucks, and Burke had barely got the Ridge cabin gate shut before they were in the yard.

Verity stepped out of the first one in a long cream coat, with a thermos held in both hands.

The old elder with the cane climbed down behind her, and a dozen Blackthorn wolves I'd known since childhood stood around the clearing in a loose ring.

Half the pack had come up the mountain to watch me.

I stood on the porch with Bram one step behind my shoulder.

"Linnea," Verity said, and her eyes were wet. "I couldn't sleep. Everyone says I've ruined everything, and I think they may be right."

"Verity," Bram said. "Go home."

"Let her speak, Alpha," the elder said. "She has driven two hours at dawn."

Verity came up to the bottom of the steps.

She was small and pale and shaking, and she looked sorry.

"I never wanted the healer to read the blood out loud," she said. "I knew what it would sound like. I wanted you to hear it in private, from me. I'm so sorry."

I said nothing.

My throat was tight.

I had liked her.

For three months she had sat on the end of my bed when I was sick, and she had not once made me feel like a patient.

"I brought your tonic," she said. "I know you're angry with me. But you can't miss a dose with three of them. Please. Do it for them, not me."

She unscrewed the lid and poured steaming liquid into the cup.

The smell came up in the cold air, honey and something bitter underneath.

I took the cup.

I had taken it every morning for three months, and my hand knew how to do it.
