Chapter 23: All Hands
Daphne's POV
The all-hands was held in the lobby, on the white marble, where I had waited.
Four hundred people stood in rows between the pillars, with the elevator doors behind a low stage.
I stood at the edge of it in my mother's jacket.
My hands were damp, and I wiped them on my skirt, and Gray caught the movement.
"Last chance to run," he said, softly.
"Not a chance."
"Good. I'd have followed you, but my knees are bad."
Anson walked to the front without notes.
He did not tap the microphone.
He only waited, and the room went silent from the front to the back.
"I'm going to tell you three things," he said. "Then I'll answer questions, and I'll answer all of them."
Nobody coughed.
"One. For eleven years, someone in this building cancelled meetings, buried letters and paid women to leave in our names. We did not know. It was done by Meredith Cowell, and she is no longer with this company."
A murmur ran down the rows.
"Two. Nine women were wronged by it. Three of them are standing in the front row today, and the other six will be here by Friday."
I looked.
The tall mother was there, and the nurse in her scrubs, and the woman who had lasted nine days.
Her hands were folded tight in front of her.
"Each of them has been offered back pay, an apology in writing, signed by me, and a position here, if she wants one." Anson looked at them. "If she doesn't, the company will pay her tuition, or her rent, or whatever she tells us she needs."
