Chapter 5: Hands Off the Assistant

The lake house was white and long and stood at the edge of the water with every window lit.

Fourteen guests sat at the dinner table, all clients, all in clothes that cost more than my car.

I stood behind them with a clipboard and a seating chart, which was my job for the night.

Meredith had come up with us in the second car.

She had straightened my collar in the hall and said, "You look lovely, dear," and for a moment I had missed my mother so much that I had to look at the floor.

Gray sat at the head of the table, because Anson refused to.

Josiah sat halfway down, and Anson sat at the foot, where he could see every face.

He had not looked at me once since we arrived.

I had noticed exactly how many times.

The man on Anson's left was our largest client, a heavyset man in his sixties who laughed at his own jokes before he finished them.

By the main course he had finished a bottle of wine alone.

I went round with the water jug.

"There she is," he said loudly, when I reached him. "The new girl. The one who stood up Anson."

"I didn't stand him up, sir. I just stood."

"Ha!" He caught my wrist.

His hand closed on it, hard, and held.

"Come sit with me, sweetheart. Let me see what the fuss is about."

"Please let go."

"What's the harm?" He pulled, and I stumbled against his chair. "Three of them hired you. I've seen how they look at you. I'd like to know what you're offering."

The table had gone silent.

I did not remember deciding to speak.

"Sir, I'm offering to refill your water. Let go of my wrist."

He laughed again, and tightened his grip.

Then Gray was standing.

He had crossed the length of the table without my seeing him move, and he stopped at the man's shoulder with one hand flat on the cloth.

He was smiling.

It was the worst smile I had ever seen on him.
