Chapter 17: Tonight

Quentin read the alert twice, and then he put the phone face down against his leg.

"They charged me," he said. "I'll be at a police station by morning."

"Then you have tonight," I said.

He stared at me.

Rhiannon had stopped in the doorway with her car keys in her teeth and her bag over one shoulder.

She took the keys out of her mouth.

"I'm going to work," she said, to the sky. "I'm going to be in an emergency room until seven. The couch pulls out. The sheets are clean. If the neighbor bangs on the wall, it's a pipe."

She walked past us to the green hatchback and did not look back once.

I took Quentin's hand and led him up three flights of stairs.

He let me.

Her door stuck, and I shouldered it open.

The apartment was dark and smelled of toast and cheap candles.

The frying pan hung on its hook by the stove, back from the war.

I turned around in the narrow kitchen, and he was right behind me.

"Claire," he said. "You've had the worst week of your life."

"Yes."

"I'm the reason."

"You're one of the reasons." I put my palm flat on his chest. "I decided this at Gilbert's table, when you said you knew you were nothing."

"That isn't the reason to do this."

"It's my reason. I get to have it."

He laughed once, low, and the sound went through my hand.

"No touching," I said. "That was my rule."

"It was a good rule."

"I'm done with it."

I kissed him again.

It was nothing like the one on the curb.

That one had been anger.

This one was slow, and he tasted of the cold air and of coffee, and when I opened my mouth he groaned and pulled me up against him.
