Chapter 13: Two Stories

Brendan looked at me on the asphalt.

Then at my leg in my hand.

Then at the man in the Bears jacket, face-down under Dez's knee with blood all over the gold tooth.

"Is that true?" he said to me.

"Ask him," I said, and pointed my leg at the van.

Dez had a statement to take and a prisoner to book, and Verity had a coat to cry on.

So we did it at home.

By four o'clock the five of us were in the living room in Lake Forest.

Dad stood at the fireplace with his hands behind his back.

Mom sat on the sofa with a box of tissues.

Verity was curled at the other end of it in a clean white sweater, her knees ruined under a blanket.

I sat in the wingback by the window with my left stump throbbing inside the liner.

"Tell them what you told me," Brendan said to Verity.

Verity pressed a tissue to her nose.

"I just wanted her to meet a donor," she said. "And the second we parked, there were police everywhere."

"So how did they know? Who told them where she'd be?"

Everyone looked at me.

I'd had four hours to decide what to say.

The truth would cost seven kids.

So I gave them a different true thing.

"The police weren't following me," I said. "They were following the van."

Brendan stopped.

"The white one with the painted windows," I said. "It took a little girl off the Lake Street stairs three weeks ago. They've been looking for it ever since. It was in that lot this morning, and so was I."

Mom made a small sound into her tissue.

Verity sat up.

"I didn't know who he was," she said. "How could I know? Annabelle, I swear to you."

"I didn't say you knew."

"Then why are you looking at me like that?"
