Chapter 11: Rhonda

Rhonda was smaller than I had pictured.

She stood in Greg's kitchen doorway at six that evening in a gray wool coat, with a leather bag over her shoulder and her hands wrapped around its strap.

Her hair was a dark bob, and her face was bare.

She looked at Greg for about a second.

Then she looked at the baby asleep on my shoulder, and her whole face changed.

"Hi," she said. "I'm Rhonda. I'm sorry. I didn't know how else to come."

"I'm Kira."

"I know."

"Sit down," Greg said. His voice was rough. "Please."

She sat at the far end of the table, away from him.

I laid Tilly in the bassinet by the radiator.

I did not look at Greg, who stood by the stove with his arms crossed over his chest and his eyes on the floor.

"Lacey wrote to me on Friday," Rhonda said. "She said, *come to the baby's welcome party, there's someone you'll want to meet.* She sent a photo of you holding the baby. I booked a flight right away."

"Why?"

"Because I knew exactly what she was doing." Rhonda opened her bag and took out a worn blue notebook with a rubber band around it. "I wanted to be there to stop it. And because I'm tired of being the one who knew."

She slid the notebook across the table.

"Open it."

I took off the rubber band.

Inside, in Lacey's round handwriting, each page had a name at the top.

The first was a woman I did not know, with a due date from six years ago and the name of her husband.

Under it Lacey had listed things in neat columns.

*Likes: flattery, being needed. Weak point: avoids a scene. Plan: godmother by the shower.*

The second page was Rhonda's.

*Husband: Greg (my brother!!). Don't worry about him, he'll do what I say. Plan: ten minutes.*

The third page was mine.

*Kira H., due Nov 3. Husband: Garner. Obeys the last voice in the room. Neighbor: ??? Check.*

There was a small arrow beside the question marks, and under it, in different ink: *GREG. Can't believe it. He moved in under her. Use it.*
