Chapter 15: Welcome Party

I walked down the path to the gate with Tilly on my shoulder.

My father took off his hat.

"Lacey wrote to me," he said. "She said you weren't well. She said you needed family."

"Did she say which family?"

"No."

"Sit in the front row, Dad," I said. "By the big screen. Watch it."

"Kira, I..."

"You came nine years late. You can come five minutes early to your seat."

He looked at me, and then he went where I pointed and sat down with his suitcase between his feet.

At two-fifteen Lacey tapped a spoon against a glass.

She stood at the head of the lawn in a white dress, with Garner at her elbow and a ring light on a stand behind her.

Thirty of her followers raised their phones.

"Friends," she said, and her voice shook on purpose. "Thank you for coming to welcome our sweet Tilly."

The guests murmured.

"Some of you know this has been the hardest season of Kira's life." She pressed a hand to her chest. "She has been struggling, and she pushed away the people who love her most. Today is about bringing her home."

A woman near the tent said, "Aww."

Garner nodded, with his eyes on his shoes.

"Garner is the best father," Lacey said. "And I'm just so proud to be Aunt Lacey."

She pressed a button on a remote.

The giant screen lit up with my belly at thirty-six weeks.

I felt Greg arrive at my back.

"Rhonda," I said under my breath.

"In position," he said. "Back steps."

I held Tilly out to him, and he took her.

The slideshow ran.

My shower, my nursery, my cake.

Photos Lacey had pulled out of my own cloud, one after another, and put music under them.

Some of the guests sniffled.

Then the last picture came up, and Lacey said into the microphone, "Kira, honey, come up here and say a few words."

I walked across my lawn.
